Legal aspects: Introduction

Data, legislation and policy

Integrity, ethics and the use of rules of conduct/guidelines play a very important role when conducting research. Think of aspects such as:

  • honesty, scrupulousness, transparency, independence and responsibility (the 5 integrity principles)
  • protection of personal data
  • respect for privacy
  • informing and treating subjects/respondents with appropriate care
  • secure collection and transmission of (privacy-sensitive) research data

All these aspects are derived from the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and the privacy legislation (GDPR).
Acting with integrity is not only the responsibility of the individual researcher, but also of his or her environment, starting with the organization in which he or she works.
All Zuyd researchers are required to sign two statements:

  • Declaration Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity [see tab Research integrity]
  • Declaration of confidentiality and personal data protection [see tab Privacy]

In addition, you may also have to address copyright (ownership) and licensing issues. If external partners are involved in your research, you will have to start by making additional agreements, including that of data ownership.
