The special thing about generative AI is that, no matter the exact input, you always get information back. This is not to say that the exact input doesn't matter. A well-known saying about GenAI is: Garbage In = Garbage Out.
On this page, you will find several frameworks through which you can be inspired when prompt engineering.
Using a good prompt is crucial, but you don't (always) have to build it from scratch yourself. Various organisations have now built their own Prompt Library. A very useful one is that of Maastricht University. These contain a kind of ‘template’ that you can edit to suit your own information needs.
Nationwide, work is underway on a Prompt Library for all higher education institutions.
Following the four-sentence principle, build your prompt based on the components:

Dan Fitzpatrick (The AI Educator) has developed the PREPARE framework. PREPARE stands for:

Barend Last (educationist) and Thijmen Sprakel (English & music teacher) recommend six steps:
Describe the task: Describe specifically and unambiguously what kind of answer you want to see. Eg.: Describe the procedure of inserting an indwelling catheter.Source: Last, B., & Sprakel, T. (2024). Meta Prompting means using an AI chatbot to create a prompt that helps the chatbot ask itself a question. This method is fast and can be much more effective. Several scientific methodologies rely on the principle of meta prompting. For example:
