Research life cycle: 1.Planning: Data management section

Why a data management section?

In order to raise responsible data management awareness, some funders, e.g. NWO and SIA, require a data management section as an appendix to your research funding application.

Status

The data management section will not be a factor in assessing and deciding whether or not to honor your research question funding application. The four questions to be answered focus on the storage of the data during, and after, the research. They encourage you to think about how you are going to organize and categorize the collected data, thereby enabling the possible
re-use of that data. As a basis the FAIR principles apply (see separate tab about FAIR).

In this section, 'data' refers to collected, raw data as well as analysed, generated data. All forms are conceivable: digital and non-digital (e.g. samples, completed questionnaires, sound recordings, etc.).

After your research request has been accepted, the data management section should be worked out in a data management plan. Funder approval of this plan is mandatory for the granting of the subsidy.

The questions

1. Is collected or generated data suitable for reuse?
2. Where will the data be stored during the research?
3. How will the data be stored long term once the project has
ended, and how will it made available to third parties for
re-use? Who will have access to the data?
4. What facilities are expected to be needed for the storage of
data during and after the study? Are these available? Think for
example of ICT facilities (capacity for data storage, bandwidth
for data transport, computing power for data processing),
cooling systems, legal expertise, (secure) archive, ...

These questions are only relevant to the storage of data suitable for re-use.
