Research life cycle: 2.Research phase: Introduction

This phase concerns the collection, storage, analysis, organisation, documentation and sharing of your research data. It includes things like securely storing your data, making backups, choosing a good folder structure and filenames, version control and the use of open file formats.

1. Use the Zuyd facilities to store your data: Zuyd Research Drive and/or O-drive; both have an extensive backup control.
2. Consider the folder structure, name convention and version methodology before the start of the project and preferably record it in the data management plan. It will save you a lot of frustration if this is fixed from the start and can be maintained properly. When files are shared, standard naming conventions are even more important.

National Coordination Point Research Data Management (LCRDM)

LCRDM facilitates a national approach to research data management in the Netherlands, this in close consultation with education and research institutions.

Five work groups are working on the development of various aspects that form the building blocks of good data management (policy) throughout the research cycle:
- facilities and data infrastructure;
- legal aspects and control;
- financial aspects;
- research support and advice;
- awareness / commitment.

Research Data Netherlands (RDNL)

RDNL is a national collaboration in which three data archives (4TU, DANS, SURFsara) join forces to promote sustainable archiving and re-use of research data.

RDNL offers, among other things, the course Essentials 4 Data Support, in which a lot of background information on data management can be found for each research phase.
