A big advantage of searching in Embase is that you can use the built-in PICO tool. This allows you to combine your building blocks in no time.
1. For each building block, enter your (Emtree) search terms.
2. Embase automatically suggests synonyms for your Emtree terms: click Add X synonyms to adopt them.
3. Select which synonyms you do (not) want to use.
4. Select a search field (e.g. Title or Abstract): this ensures that your search terms appear as major topics in the search results.
5. Show your results.
If you find too many results, you can use the filter options to get to fewer sources. For example, set years via Date, choose a particular Study Type or search for research focussing specifically on male or female patients via Gender.
After setting your filters, choose Search again.
Have you already searched PubMed before searching in Embase? If so, you have already found relevant MEDLINE articles.
► Type NOT [medline]/lim in the search bar to ensure that MEDLINE is not searched.
